Books and Decorating

Anna Quindlen said, “I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think interior decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves.”  That’s my kind of interior decorating style!  Unfortunately in a 600 sq. ft. apartment the bookshelf opportunities, built or purchased, are limited.

I can still dream, plan, and look forward to the possibilities of someday.  A few months ago I read Books Make a Home: Elegant Ideas for Storing and Displaying Books by Damian Thompson.   I have my doubts about storing books in the bathroom but otherwise it had some pretty cool ideas.  I believe there was even a photo of a chair with bookshelves built on the back and sides.  Although people come up with off-beat shelving ideas, I’m more of a traditionalist for my home library ideas.  The website Beautiful-Libraries.com has images of some places I’d love to have and places where I’d hesitate to pull books off the shelves, put my feet up, and enjoy with a pot of tea on a rainy day.  My favorite style of bookshelves are the mission-style, sometimes called Craftsman or Stickley.

The Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges once said, “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”  I hope all book lovers can have their kind of Paradise nearby.
